| About me | I’m working as a stores supervisor for a radar company in Stellenbosch. South Africa. I have been living in Strand for five years now and had a shop right across the street from the old Police Station/jail. This building has been unused for many years and is now populated by street children. Due to having a shop so close to them I often became involved with them and their plight. I put on band aids, gave pain medication and doctored colds. Once you get to know them, you find that street children are people too, and the horrible reality of child prostitution confronts you. These children do anything for a sniff of glue, or a crust of bread. They are used and abused by each other and their “cheapskate” customers. You come to love them and care for them and look on helplessly as authorities turn their heads away and pretend these kids do not exist. I have tried through petitions, etc. to help these children but it’s like banging your head against a brick wall. Now I have a full time job an a lot less time. I don't see the children often enough anymore and still feel helpless when I look at them. | |
