Mission Statement
Skills, employment and self-employment trainingAssisting with 'independent' reintegration with normative society
During November 2000 we were once again faced with the reality of the lives of our young women or 'older' girl-children . a reality in which society considers her too old to care for, as she is perceived to have voluntarily entered into a life of prostitution and life on the street. Sadly, once in this situation it is almost impossible to make any choices, let alone the choice of an alternative 'career', a better life and a future filled with hope. Theosis Skills Centre in Johannesburg is a natural extension of the Hillbrow programmes in that it forms a fourth phase in the process of recovering the young person we work with.
The skills centre presents short skills training courses, thus enabling the older girl-children to rise above their traumatic experiences and enable them to learn a skill that will help them to make a living and to become self-supporting, and no longer be a burden to society. These skills should facilitate the reintegration process and serve the older girls to facilitate her next move toward a better future..
The children who will benefit by attending the Skills Centre are:
Intombi Shelter girls who are at present attending school in Hillbrow. On Saturdays and during school holidays, these girls will attend Theosis Skills Centre to learn employment and self-employment skills.
Children at Intombi Shelter who are not attending school (some of them has had little or no formal schooling) will be encouraged and empowered to learn a skill or skills as they are the most in need of what Theosis Skills Centre has to offer.
Girls from Hillbrow Drop-In Centre who show themselves eager to break away from life on the streets. Some of them have a High School qualification but do not posses a skill that enables them to find employment.
Girls and young women referred to us by other Welfare Organisations.
